FISHERMEN AT SHAMA ATTACK FISHERIES OFFICIALS

on

Reports reaching Empire News indicate there was a misunderstanding between
some fishermen and officials from the Fisheries Enforcement Unit (F.E.U.)
Takoradi, over the use of light and generator for fishing at Shama

A source told Empire News that the Fisheries department had a hint that some
fishermen were using Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) methods of fishing
known as IUU.

IUU generally refers to fishing conducted in violation of national laws or
internationally agreed conservation and management measures in effect in oceans
around the world.

On arrival at Shama, the personnel ceased three generators, six metal tripods fixed
with long electrical cables, bulbs and a dead dolphin caught by a fisherman.

It was alleged that some of the affected fishermen who had their items ceased
attacked the fisheries personnel and collected the illegal fishing gears but following
the timely intervention from the backup team they were able to retrieve only two
generators.
